The first people known to have visited the area of North Wildwood were the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans, an Algonquian speaking tribe. They carved trails through the forests of Five Mile Beach to the north end of the island.
On August 28, 1609 Robert Juet, exploring the coast of the New World with English Navigator Henry Hudson, recorded his sighting of the area in his journal, but over 250 years would pass before permanent settlers would come to stay on the island. Prior to their arrival mainland farmers pastured their livestock on Five Mile Island. The farmers ferried their animals on flatboats and then turned them loose to roam freely about the island.
Whalers and fishermen used the Hereford Inlet as a safe haven during the 17th and 18th centuries because it was conveniently located between Great Egg Harbor in the north and the entrance to the Delaware Bay in the south. The fishermen and whalers became the first permanent settlers on the island, and their and their small dwellings in the community known first as “Anglesea” would later become what is known today at North Wildwood.
North Wildwood, New Jersey was incorporated in 1917. It was previously called Anglesea Borough and North Wildwood Borough, and it covers approximately 1.8 square miles of the “Five Mile Island,” which is also home to Wildwood, New Jersey, and the boroughs of West Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.
North Wildwood has some of the finest beaches in the USA according to the Travel Channel, and no beach badges are required! The first beach tram service in New Jersey began in North Wildwood, and that’s a good thing because the beaches in North Wildwood are very deep, and the trip from the street over the sands to the water’s edge can be hot on the feet in season, so a tram is a great idea!
From Queen Anne Victorians to the Doo Wop era of the 1950’s, the architecture of the more than 50 bed & breakfasts, hotels and motels in North Wildwood promise vacationers, and weekenders great places to stay for good times!. You can stop by the North Wildwood chamber of commerce for a self-guided tour of the Doo Wop-style buildings, and split a malt with your best girl in the Retro Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor.

Speaking of Hereford Inlet, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood at 1st and Central Avenues began operating in 1874, and it is listed on the state and National Historic Registers. The lighthouse sits in the historic “Angelsea” section. It’s accompanied by the award-winning garden of the George F. Boyer Museum, where visitors can see the artifacts, photos and memorabilia from the early days of North Wildwood and its sister communities on “Five Mile Island.” The Boyer Museum is also the headquarters for the Marbles Hall of Fame. Yes, we said “marbles!” It’s a great game that is still played by youngsters of every age, and you’ll enjoy seeing its history here.

On Thursdays and Saturday nights from July through September don’t miss the free concerts at the amphitheater on Ocean and 2nd Avenues in North Wildwood. You can even sample what are referred to as the “best hotdogs in the USA” in North Wildwood at Maui’s Dog House on New Jersey Avenue. With 29 different toppings available, we won’t argue the point! They even offer a “Soprano” dog with spinach, garlic, white wine and sharp provolone cheese. Now, that sounds like an offer you can’t refuse!
The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA), was formed in July 1993 to consolidate the tourism economy of the three creating municipalities: North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and the City of Wildwood. GWTIDA advertises and promotes the island as a family vacation destination, and it also serves as the operations and marketing organization of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA), owner/operator of the Wildwoods Convention Center.

The GWTIDA is the island’s destination management organization overseeing marketing, advertising, promotions, public relations, research, planning and product development functions. It enhances the overall experience for visitors to the Wildwoods, helps to plan, fund, and execute over 160 events in the Wildwoods during the year, including Family Nights on the Boardwalk, Fireworks, Classic Car Shows, The Thunder on the Sand Race Series, Pirates Weekend, the Irish and Italian Festivals, the International Kite Festival, and the National Marbles Tournament.
